HEATHER HINES

Principal

Heather's background is in urban planning and historic preservation, including over 20 years of experience as a planning professional in Utah, Washington, and California. Since 2004, she has worked for and consulted with the North Bay communities of Sausalito, Santa Rosa, and Petaluma. Her planning portfolio includes both long-range and current planning projects in preservation and adaptive reuse, downtown infill, rezonings, general plan amendments, large residential subdivisions, as well as development of historic district guidelines, affordable housing strategies, and zoning code updates. Heather has also worked extensively with neighborhood and community groups to help them navigate and participate in the planning process.

Heather has been engaged in historic preservation in the communities of Logan, Utah, Seattle, Washington, and Santa Rosa, California. She staffed preservation review boards and worked with local preservation neighborhood groups. Heather created a local façade rehabilitation grant program and developed design guidelines for Logan's Downtown Commercial District, and created a photo inventory of Seattle's Historic Ballard District. She is currently working on modifications to Santa Rosa's historic combining district to better enhance and protect the city's designated resources.

Heather received both a Master's Degree in Urban Planning and a Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation from the University of Washington. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts from Sonoma State University's Environmental Studies and Planning Department. While attending the University of Washington she received a two-year fellowship from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. She participated in a three month graduate architectural studio in the Italian hilltown of Civita de Bagnoregio. Heather recently completed the Green Building Professional Certificate program through Sonoma State University and is participating in the year-long Leadership Training for a Sustainable Future through the Leadership Institute for Ecology and the Economy.

Heather is the Chair of the Sonoma County Landmarks Commission and is actively involved in the Bennett Valley Alliance of Parents and Teachers and the Bennett Valley Education Foundation. Heather and her family love to travel and recently spent time in the City of Oaxaca, Mexico.
